Welcome to the Ngozi Website
We live in Castle Hill, about 30kms north-west from the centre of Sydney, Australia. Once a semi-rural suburb, we are fortunate to live on half an acre of fully-fenced and landscaped property. It is ideal for our active and inquisitive Basenjis.
Our first two Basenjis arrived in 2002. Our idea was two loving pets. Pukkanut Wirra Wirra “Uzuri” and Pukkanut Lakes Folly “Tepy” endeared us so much to the breed, that we were soon involved in showing with the arrival of our third Basenji, BISS Australian Champion Bayenzi Sugar Minott “Maseru”.
A year after “Maseru” arrived as a puppy, we fell in love with a puppy bitch and welcomed, Australian Champion Wazazi High Definition “Mika” into our pack.
Our four Basenjis live primarily as well-loved and hopelessly spoiled pets .... and show dogs on the weekends.
We are members of the Basenji Club of NSW The Basenji Hound Association of Queensland The Basenji Club of Great Britain
We are members of Royal New South Wales Canine Council; We are registered breeders.
Over the past 10 years we have learned a great deal about this wonderful and unique breed and would be happy to share this with potential new owners or any person interested in knowing more about the Basenji.
Our Pack.... Our Basenji pack constantly reminds us of a pride of lions, with Maseru (our male) lazing in the sun thinking he is 'King'.
Similar to a pride of lions, our pack runs on girl power.
The reality is this: he will never be “dominant” over the 3 girls. In Basenji society, the females are the ones with the real power. Maseru allows them to “run the show” as long as he can boss them from time to time and look regal. He constantly craves their attention, making sure that he is still loved.
Our pack has a natural balance and all four play and run together. The leader is our matriarch bitch, “Tepy”. She is quick to discipline the others; keeping law and order (we often refer to her as the fun police), she is the first, however, to investigate if one of the pack yelps or is injured.
Tepy rules with an 'iron fist', which works well as the other two bitches are submissive and will allow her to lead the way. Maseru, being a male, understands that he is just allowed to 'be'.
With the hierarchy well-established, they all get on amicably and spend many hours chasing each other, rumbling, hunting, chasing the various neighbours’ dogs through the fences .... or, just sleeping - Basenjis love to sleep!
Why Did We Choose a Basenji? When we moved from the inner-city for a quieter life (although not so quiet with four Basenjis), our first task was to obtain a dog.
Jason grew up with German Shepherds and Poodles and Jeffrey, a Rough Coated Collie and an Australian Kelpie. Although these breeds are, in there own right, lovely breeds and make great pets, they were not quite what we were after.
We wanted a dog that could live in the house, as well as be happy outside when we were at work. A small to medium-size dog that wasn’t a “dopey, barking, tongue-lolling, eager-to -please” pet.
So our search began. We were both aware of the breed “Basenji” and loved their independent nature; along with the fact that they were not a human-made breed, rather a native animal.
As we were both experienced dog owners we believed we could fulfil the responsibility of owning this unique breed.
Most people recommend that a Basenji is for experienced dog owners, and to a degree this is true.
